Many British cars in the 1959’s and 1960’s used clutch release “bearings” which in fact aren’t a bearing at all but have a carbon face. Car that I know used these were: Austin Healey SpriteMG MidgetMG T-seriesMG Magnette MGAMGB Morris MinorMorris MajorAustin LancerHillman ImpSunbeam AlpineDatsun The carbon used in the modern reproduction units is nowhere as strong or dense as that used 40 to 50 years ago when the cars were new. The modern release “bearings” have a very short life. The shortest life-span that I know of was six weeks. It took just six weeks to turn what looked like a perfectly good new carbon “bearing” into a pile of dust in the bell-housing. The owner was not pleased having to pay the mechanic to remove the engine again. No, there was no warranty on the carbon as all the manufacturers refuse to accept that there is a problem! STOP PRESS: There is a new record. From brand new carbon thrust “bearing” to broken chunks of carbon in the bell housing after qualifying and three races on the Saturday of a two day race meeting. The customer missed all four Sunday races and had to pull his engine out – again! STOP PRESS: Another new record – ten minutes in a road car! See comment below from Doug. Since there is no commercially available roller release bearing available, I started making my own in year 2010. I’ve sold over 550 of them to date, both locally and internationally, with not one problem and zero failures. I use the original cast iron carrier, suitably modified on my lathe to accept a high grade fully sealed roller bearing, into which is pressed a nitrided steel sleeve with a baked-on Teflon front face. The Teflon coating was designed by Cosworth for use on Formula 1 engine pistons. These roller release bearings will outlast many carbon ones, and are essential if you’ve upgraded to a heavy duty pressure plate. Of course you can continue to use your old carbon style “bearing” if you really get your jollies out of removing and replacing engines to get to the thrust bearing! I make the release bearing with different offsets to suit the different model cars. Just tell me which one you need. The 948cc version will also fit Hillman Imp, and the 1098cc version will fit some Datsuns. See comments below. The L320 truck for 1965 switches to a floor shifter and used a more modern roller bearing.
